Americana Music Soundtrack: The Ultimate Morning Drive Playlist

In 2014, life changed dramatically. I became a grandfather to two wonderful grandchildren—Oliver was born in March and Zoe in September, born to my sons Andrew and Peter. I also retired in September of that year, becoming a full-time babysitter and blogger. Two to three days a week, I had a long commute from Riverside to Paulsboro, NJ. My music always came with me, and this is the soundtrack for one of those December trips.

How the Americana Music Soundtrack Developed

This week has been all about Americana music! Three albums got heavy rotation during my runs and drives:

  • Via Portland by The Mulligan Brothers
  • Pacific Surf Line by GospelbeacH
  • Brighter Every Day by Trout Steak Revival

Since it was an Americana week, it was only fitting that my iPod shuffle delivered plenty of twang on my morning drive to Paulsboro. Here are the track-by-track highlights from that trip.

The Morning Americana Music Track Listing

“Pretty Birdy” – Kenny Baker (Album: Cotton Baggin’ 2000)
Kenny Baker was a legendary bluegrass fiddler best known for playing 25 years with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys.

“Nightmare” – Pat Green (Album: Live at Billy Bob’s Texas Roadhouse)
This album was my introduction to Pat Green. Any artist who grew up listening to Jerry Jeff Walker and Townes Van Zandt is top-tier in my book!

“Safe Haven” – Claire Lynch (Album: Silver and Gold)
Another fantastic bluegrass artist with a smooth, memorable vocal delivery.

“Air” – JJ Grey & Mofro
A great transition into a soul-infused, non-traditional side of Americana.

“Turkey Bird” – Haywood Banks (Album: Haywood Banks Live!)
Adds some lighthearted musical humor to the drive (especially “The Taser Song”).

“Open Country” – Steep Canyon Rangers (Album: Nobody Knows You)
The Steep Canyon Rangers have come a long way since I first found their CDs in the bargain bins at Tunes Used CDs.

“Satori” – Rodrigo y Gabriela (Album: Rodrigo y Gabriela)
The first non-Americana curveball of the morning. Two dynamic acoustic guitarists with incredible rhythm!

“Scat” – Blind Corn Liquor Pickers (Album: The Blind Corn Liquor Pickers)
A fantastic instrumental track from a band that deserves a re-visit on modern streaming platforms.

“It’s Been So Long” – Randy Kohrs (Album: Quicksand)
Straight-up traditional bluegrass featuring Kohrs’ masterclass dobro playing.

“Come on in This House” – Elvin Bishop (Album: The Blues Rolls On)
A blues highlight featuring James Cotton, Kim Wilson, and The Homemade Jamz Band.

“Nothing to Lose” – Eric Gales (Album: The Eric Gales Band)
Closing out the blues segment with powerful guitar work from Eric Gales.

Final Thoughts

That morning shuffle was a great start to the day and a fitting conclusion to a week immersed in roots music. Check out any of these artists if you’re looking to add classic bluegrass, blues, and Americana to your daily commuting mix.
